Hello, my name is Jason Smith. I am a painter living
in Arizona. I have a wife named Willow and several pet rocks. Below you
can read more about my work.
My work seeks to tell a story or give the impression about something subconsciously.
To me color and form are crucial in my work. When I work on a piece, I
freely use form and objects to ground my subject and suggest what the
viewer might see in the mind's eye. The artwork created in my childhood
is very important to me because when we are young, the thought process
is unburdened by convention and is largely personal and unspoiled. I try
to bring this into my working process and ignore the baggage in my mind
to create a free flow of consciousness. My desire is for all the parts
in my work to come together supporting the idea as a whole, while giving
individual stories in the margins.
Another aspect of my work deals with raw emotions and I use color to
convey this. To me color is like the key in music that sets the underlying
mood of a song. I pick colors that would not normally come together to
set the mood in my artwork. My desire is to have the viewer respond emotionally
and the response I seek to convey is both part of the work and independent
of what is being represented. To me, this is like the 3rd dimension; going
beyond what is both seen to what is felt at a very primal level. I feel
we as human beings don't have full control of this response. The mental
image you create cannot perceive itself. So you must ask yourself, what
perceives the mental image? This is what I believe makes each response
so unique.
